St. Brigid's Day Crosses

1st Feb 2024

In 4th class, we had a great day learning all about St. Brigid and making St. Brigid’s crosses. Making a Saint Brigid´s day cross out of reeds/rushes is an ancient tradition in Ireland. Traditionally, a St Brigid's cross was hung over the front door to protect a home from danger symbolising Faith, Hope, and Protection.

The skill of making St. Brigid’s Day crosses involves using rushes to make a square shape with arms extending from each corner. The process of weaving was a great skill to develop in class.  The children were very quick learners and can now make excellent, tightly woven crosses.

We enjoyed making our crosses and sharing them with the grandparents who visited our class for Grandparent’s Day.
