BALROTHERY NATIONAL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER OCTOBER, 2008
1. Welcome
A warm welcome back to all pupils, staff and parents for 2008/2009. A special welcome to new staff members Mr. Eoin Callaghan and Ms. Aifric Markham. Our best wishes to Ms. Fionnula Larkin who retired on September 1 after 37 years teaching in Balrothery National School.
2. Interactive White Boards
Thanks to all who supported our Sponsored Walk in May. This raised the phenomenal sum of E11,200. This money added to the support of the Management Board and the generous sponsorship of four local companies enabled us to purchase boards for seven classrooms at a cost of E35,000. The boards will enhance the quality of education within the school and we hope to eventually have one in every classroom.
3. Holidays/Vacation Days.
Please note that in addition to the dates already notified there will also be:
a. one in-service planning day on Friday 12 December – School Closed.
b. Parent/Teacher meetings on Thursday November 27 and Friday 28 commencing 1pm each day. Children going home at 12.30pm.
c. First Communion – Saturday April 25 at 11am
d. Confirmation – Wednesday May 27 at 11.30am

4. Extra Curriculum Activities
At the moment we have Swimming, Gaelic Football, Cricket, Rugby, Crafty Kids, Homework Club, Irish Dancing and Choir. Further activities will take place throughout the year.

6. Healthy Eating Policy
Please note that the school has a healthy eating policy and also a fruit break in each class every day. See School Website for further details.
7. Parking
We ask that parents would be careful while parking outside the school. Please do not park in the bus areas and do not ignore the cones.
8. School Opening Times
The official school opening time is 9.20am yet some parents are leaving children outside the school as early as 8.20am. The school cannot supervise children who are arriving at such an early time. Parents are reminded that children are not insured on the school grounds until 9.00am. Doors will open for infants only at 9.00am. All other children will not be admitted until 9.20am. On wet days children will be admitted at 9.00am.
9. Birthday Invitations
We request that, where possible, invitations to birthday parties are given out outside of school. If this is not possible please ensure that they are given out in a sensitive manner.

Art Fundraiser.
The school will hold an art fundraiser with the view to purchasing classroom equipment on Oct 17. A professional artist’s canvas and paints will be provided to each child.Work will be displayed in the school on the 21 and 22 of October. We encourage all children to take part in this unique activity. At Halloween all Masterpieces will be taken home. Cost of participation is €11 per child to be paid to class teacher by Monday13th Oct.
